Career summary
Hiroto Saiki pitches the way a stonemason works: without hurry, without waste, with the quiet conviction that the material will yield. The fastball arrives at up to 156 kilometers per hour, but velocity is almost beside the point — what breaks hitters is the forkball that vanishes beneath their bats, and the strike zone treated as private property.
His career is built on an absence. Elbow trouble kept him out of first-team games in 2020 and 2021, with Tommy John surgery in November 2020 becoming the turning point. The hard-throwing kid from Kobe had to be rebuilt, tendon and temperament alike. What returned was something better than what was lost. From 2022 through 2025 he threw more than 490 innings with an earned run average of 1.71 — numbers that read less like statistics than like a monk's ledger. In 2025 he claimed the Central League ERA title at 1.55.
In the completed 2026 regular season, Saiki went 10-5 with a 2.51 ERA in 25 appearances and 154 innings. His 175 strikeouts brought him his first Central League strikeout title, against just 30 walks. A complete-game shutout was part of the ledger, but the larger achievement was the season-long balance between missing bats and refusing free passes. His ERA rose from the previous year's exceptional level; his strikeout total reached a new career high. The stonemason had found another way to shape the same material.
