Career summary
Teruaki Sato won the 2026 Central League batting Triple Crown, leading the league with a .306 batting average, 39 home runs and 106 RBIs. He became the ninth player in NPB history to achieve the feat, and the first Hanshin Tiger to do so since Randy Bass in 1986 — a forty-year wait ended by a hitter whose power has long made Koshien hold its breath.
Drafted in the first round by the Hanshin Tigers in 2020 out of Kindai University, he arrived as a contradiction: a left-handed slugger of enormous, almost reckless power, folded into the frame of an athlete built like a middleweight boxer. His early years were a public education in failure — long droughts of strikeouts endured under the most unforgiving fanbase in Japanese baseball — and it is precisely this apprenticeship in humiliation that gives his present mastery its weight.
The 2025 season was his answer: 40 home runs, 102 runs batted in, both league titles claimed, along with the Central League MVP award. Then came 2026, and the answer became a place in the record book. He played all 143 regular-season games, collected a league-leading 165 hits and 40 doubles, and finished with a .383 on-base percentage and .609 slugging percentage. The home run and RBI titles were his for a second consecutive year; the batting and hits titles were his first.
For readers new to Japanese baseball, the Triple Crown means leading a league in batting average, home runs and runs batted in during the same season. NPB had not seen one since Munetaka Murakami in 2022. Sato's was the thirteenth such season in its history: not a projection of what his swing might become, but a completed achievement. Whatever comes next, Sato at Koshien is a spectacle worth the pilgrimage.
